In 1943, artist Norman Rockwell published the Four Freedoms--interpretations of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union Address: Freedom of speech, Freedom of worship, Freedom from want, and Freedom from fear. It shined a light on America's optimistic role in the world, and came to define the era of the New Deal.

A Series of Fortitudes is dedicated to the optimists, who through sheer force of will, propelled their vision into the world and changed the course of history.
